The Crypt of the Super Scarce!
Variants and other scarcities for sale.
I've been collecting long enough to know that "scarce" is not a term for Amazing Spider-man #300, the black bagged Superman #75, or any other item that exists in collectors' hands in the tens of thousands. If you can find multiple copies of an item on eBay at any given moment, it is NOT scarce! These are items that are genuinely tough to come by, and in some cases may even be one-of-a-kind!

EFFECTIVE 2021, THIS PAGE IS NO LONGER BEING UPDATED AND THESE ITEMS ARE NO LONGER FOR SALE. THIS NOTICE WILL BE REMOVED IF/WHEN THESE ITEMS BECOME AVAILABLE.

Famous First Edition HARDBACK Detective #27
#C-28The incredibly tough to find hardback edition.
Have you EVER seen one of these for sale? One seller on eBay has two copies of this book (both over $200). Otherwise, have you EVER seen this offered for sale? Some moisture damage to interior, but still a nice copy.

Famous First Edition HARDBACK Sensation #1
#C-30The incredibly tough to find hardback edition.
Have you EVER seen one of these for sale? Well, there are a few of the FFE hardbacks offered by two different on eBay for $60-$300+ at the moment. However, the Sensation #1 is not one of the ones being offered. Sorry, no DJ.

Famous First Edition HARDBACK Sensation #1
#C-30FOUR of the FIVE incredibly tough to find hardback editions.
Have you EVER seen one of these for sale? Well, there are a few of the FFE hardbacks offered by two different on eBay for $60-$300+ each at the moment. Beyond that, these are seemingly NEVER offered for sale. Because I bought every copy I could find since I started looking for them in 1988 (a total of 12), I have managed to obtain duplicates of a few. Here's a rare opportunity to own FOUR out of the FIVE different hardbacks in ONE PURCHASE!
Detective #27   Sensation #1   Whiz #2 (#1)   Wonder Woman #1

Incredible Hulk
#333 The scarce second print. How scarce? So scarce that, even though it was printed more than a decade ago, its existence still is not acknowledged in Overstreet or Wizard. So scarce that no copies show up on the CGC census. So scarce, in fact, that CGC mis-graded this one as a first print! Even CGC's experts didn't know about this one! To say that this is one tough-to-find book would be quite the understatement! ONLY CGC GRADED COPY! CGC 9.2.   Back cover   CGC Label   $125

Iron Man
#149 The scarce second print. How scarce? So scarce that Overstreet and Wizard haven't even acknowledged that this book exists! So scarce that there are NO copies yet on the CGC census, which makes this the HIGHEST CGC GRADED COPY IN THE WORLD! The book was printed in 2002. CGC 9.0. $45

Kosher Comics
#1 Published in 1966 by Parallax, which also published JFK's Great Society comic. Not listed in Overstreet or in CGC census. VG (Sorry, the pic is of my personal copy, which grades higher. Scan available upon request.) SOLD

The Little Fir Tree
nn 1942 Rare Walt Kelly art. Too scarce for Gerber. I feel kind of funny listing this here alongside Astro City and New Avengers, because this is in a class of its own. These days, the word "rare" is absurdly overused. People use the word "rare" to describe things that were produced strictly for the collector's market in quantities in the 100's or even thousands. You won't catch me overusing the word "rare" like that. However, this book truly qualifies as "rare", "scarce", and lots of other adjectives. Overstreet records THREE known sales of this book! Check out the Promotional section in Overstreet and you'll see that one copy in Mint sold for $1750 back in 1986 (back when Amazing Spider-man #1 NM was going for $800 and Action #1 was a mere $18K), one in VF sold for $1,000 in 1991 (when ASM #1 in NM was #3400), and one in VG/FN sold for $1500 in 2002. Interior contains both color and b&w pages. This copy appears VG, but some of the b&w interior panels have been colored with crayon, and the spine is starting to split. $495
Marvel Spotlight v2#1 Variant with no issue number on the cover. NM $15

New Warriors
#3 The scarce second print. Here are some photos taken before slabbing: Compare front cover of variant to original.   Compare back cover of variant to original.   Compare interior of variant to original.   $55

Reform School Girl
nn The classic! The original bad-girl photo cover! And another one that's too scarce for words! When was the last time you saw one of these for sale? Or have you ever? CGC Unrestored GD2.0. Back cover     CGC Label

Seduction of the Innocent
I have available not one, but THREE 1954 printings of Seduction of the Innocent, the book that is largely blamed for the downfall of EC comics and for nearly killing the entire U.S. comic book industry.

Since this is one of the things I have a great interest in, I always pick up copies when I can, but they are getting tougher and tougher to find. It seems that the four modern reprints haven't lessened the demand for the original printings.

Seduction of the Innocent, 1954 second printing, no DJ or bibliography, $125.

Seduction of the Innocent, 1954 first printing, no DJ or bibliography, $195.

Seduction of the Innocent, 1954 first printing, WITH DUST JACKET AND BIBLIOGRAPHY! NOT a former library copy! This one has it all, true believer! Not only is this the first printing, not only does it have a dust jacket that's in remarkable condition, but this copy also has that elusive bibliography! If you've followed the history of SOTI, you know that the publisher removed the bibliography from nearly all copies of this book before they were sold. According to Dr. Wertham, SOTI's publisher feared lawsuits from the comic book publishers if they left the bibliography intact. So they neatly sliced out the bibliography from almost all copies. $595

Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos

Sub-mariner #8 SECOND HIGHEST GRADED! Scarce second print, from 1994. The content is all the original Sub-mariner #8, with a classic John Buscema battle Thing/Sub-mariner battle cover. And it's a black cover, t'boot! The entire contents, including letter column and indicia, are identical to the original 1960's Subby 8. The only difference is the ads. This is a fantastic CGC 9.4 NM+. Only two other copies shows up on the CGC census! This one is the SECOND HIGHEST GRADED COPY! $75

Sub-mariner
#8 Scarce second print, from 1994. The content is all the original Sub-mariner #8, with a classic John Buscema battle Thing/Sub-mariner battle cover. And it's a black cover, t'boot! The entire contents, including letter column and indicia, are identical to the original 1960's Subby 8. The only difference is the ads. NM $15

Thor Special
#2 The scarce second print. The book was printed in 1994 with 1994 ads, but otherwise the content is all of the silver-age book! This is one tough-to-find book. VF/NM $8

Tomb of Dracula
#25 The scarce second print. The book was printed in 1994 with 1994 ads, but otherwise the content is all of the bronze-age book! This is one tough-to-find book. VF/NM $8

Wisco/Klarer Comic Book
nn Another one so rare it's not in Overstreet. This is an uncut set of three Wisco/Klarer books: Blaze Carson, Tex Taylor, and Kid Colt. How'd you like to have a ONE OF A KIND Marvel comic book from 1950... one that's too scarce for Gerber or Overstreet? $495

X-Men
#28 The scarce second print. The book was printed in 1994 with 1994 ads, but otherwise the content is all of the silver-age book, including indicia! This is one tough-to-find book. NM- $15

X-Men
#62 The scarce second print. The book was printed in 1994 with 1994 ads, but otherwise the content is all of the silver-age book by Roy Thomas and Neal Adams! While the quality of most of these 1994 reprints is absolutely top-notch, this book has slightly "muddy" looking cover inks, as though it's a reprint of a reprint. I think the source material they used for this cover wasn't as high quality as that of the others in the series. Still, this is one tough-to-find book. NM $30
X-men #63 SECOND HIGHEST GRADED! Scarce second print, from 1994. The entire contents, including letter column and indicia, are identical to the original (Uncanny) X-men #63 by Roy Thomas and Neal Adams. The only difference is the ads. This is a fantastic CGC 9.6 NM+. Only ONE other copy shows up on the CGC census. $125

X-Men
#63 The scarce second print. The book was printed in 1994 with 1994 ads, but otherwise the content is all of the silver-age book by Roy Thomas and Neal Adams! This is one tough-to-find book. NM $30

Uncanny X-men
#282 SECOND HIGHEST GRADED! Scarce gold cover second print, from 1991. So far, only ONE OTHER COPY of this book shows up on the CGC census! This is a fantastic CGC 9.4 NM. $30

Young Men
#25 The scarce second print. The book was printed in 1994 and has the original 1950's ads! It's an exact reproduction of the golden-age Atlas book, featuring the Human Torch, Captain America, and the Sub-Mariner! the only differences: the cover ads (inside FC, inside BC and BC) are from 1994, and the indicia says "second print" at the very end. This is one tough-to-find book. NM- $20

If you see a price that looks too good to be true... odds are pretty good that it's not a typo and it's bargain-priced because I want to sell it! Thanks!
