Tips & Tricks

COLOR

If you want to change the color of your Jello, just add some food coloring after mixing the Jello and water.

FLAVOR

The most common alcohols added to Jello shots are vodka and rum, but be creative!  Why limit yourself?  You can invent great new flavors by using other potent potables like Jack Daniel's (great with lemon Jello), Southern Comfort, Midori, Chambord (if you're independently wealthy) tequila, or just about anything else.  I've yet to find a Jello flavor that mixes well with Kahlua or Bailey's Irish Cream (although they do go well with chocolate pudding, but that's a topic for another web site).  Keep in mind that almost any cocktail you can mix can also be made in Jello shot form.  What's your favorite drink?

Water is the easy way to make Jello, but you open up a whole new world of possibilities when you use fruit juices instead of water.  Try making Robitussin Jello shots by boiling two cups of Ocean Spray Cran Raspberry, and adding four envelopes of Knox gelatin (add the gelatin REALLY slowly while stirring to avoid clumping), then Captain Morgan rum.  Take a stroll down the juice aisle at the grocery store and see what inspires you.

ALCOHOL CONTENT

Most alcohols you are likely to add, such as common vodkas and rums, are 80 proof. When you dilute them with two parts water, you end up with about 27 proof (13 1/2% alcohol) Jello shots. But you can vary the alcohol percentage by using different strengths of alcohol.  For stronger Jello shots, try using 100 proof vodka (for 33 proof shots) or Bacardi 151 (for 50 proof shots).  You could even use 190-proof Everclear (grain alcohol).  The only catch here is that using more potent alcohol makes the gelatin less likely to set.  When using really potent alcohols (above 120 proof) I recommend using an additional one half cup boiling water and one envelope of Knox gelatin. Be forewarned: the last batch of Jello shots made with 190 proof grain alcohol receive such rave reviews as "nasty", "evil" and "it tastes like ass" at Jill Monson's last party.

SHAPE

Again, the possibilities are endless.  Sure, you can just cut your Jello shots into cubes and toss the cubes on a plate.  But you can also build things with those cubes.  You can cut different shapes out of the pan of Jello, which is how I made the Pina Colada Palm Tree (see the Pina Colada page.    There are also all kinds of molds available.  If the occasion is a Christmas party, there are countless Christmas-themed molds.  If the party involved is a bachelor or bachelorette party, consider the adult-oriented molds.  You get the idea.  If you use the mold method, it's always good to take a disposable plastic knife along so people can cut a shot of any size they like.
